Asus bamboo-clad 'eco' laptop

Now, laptop maker Asus is well known for its willingness to bring all sorts of hi-tech compounds into the manufacture of its notebook computers, but it hasn't ignored more traditional materials. It's already released a leather-clad laptop and has now begun touting what it claims is the world's first bamboo computer.

Called the EcoBook, this concept notebook is clearly pitched at the greener consumer and all those folk who fancy a wind-powered mobile phone charger to pitch on top of their teepees.
Like the leather machine, the EcoBook is built out of all the usual plastic and metal materials - all "environmentally friendly [and] recyclable", Asus pledged - but equipped with a bamboo veneer.
Asus calls this a "bionic design concept" - not, as we first thought, a reference to the Six Million Dollar Man, but the laptop's use of "bio-degradable materials for the outer shell", which later "decomposes and becomes part of life's endless cycle".
Asus' EcoBook: peddling life's endless cycle
Florid hyperbole aside, we think the bamboo EcoBook looks rather good. In fact, we can't wait to get our hands on one. But we're not sure we can quite sat the same for Asus' other bio concept: a paper-covered laptop. Specifically, recycled paper, giving it the distinct impression it's been made out of old eggboxes...

Compaq Presario 2209CL Intel Celeron M 1.4GHz

This refurbished laptop computer lets you get the power of higher priced computers for a rock bottom price.
This computer with quite a range of features allowing you to do all the things you need without having to upgrade soon.
Although it comes with a slightly slower Celron M, this cheap laptop computer excels in other areas. It’s huge 15 inch monitor is one of these, allowing a huge viewing area for those who are used to small laptop monitors.
It comes equipped with fast DDR333/PC2700 ram and 512MB of it. This provides a huge advantage when running the slightly memory hungry operating systems we use today, allowing lots of power for other things too.
It’s bus speed is 400MHz, which is another factor in this discount laptop computers favor. The faster bus allows information to pass faster between the components of the computer, providing more performance than a simple processor upgrade might.
The hard drive is a standard 60GB affair. The optical drive is a CDRW, DVD-ROM combo drive. For this price range this is more than fine, in fact it’s great. Although it might be one of the first things I would consider upgrading.
The graphics is handled by a built in Intel Integrated Graphics controller which uses 64MB of the system memory.
As well as all these, it has wireless LAN support, so you can find internet hotspots anywhere you go. Modem ports and USB 2.0 round off the package.
One other useful feature is that the touchpad which is used when no mouse is present can be turned off, avoiding accidentally pressing it while typing documents or working on other things that don’t require the mouse.

new AR and SZ series of Sony VAIOs notebooks

Sony, the premium music entertainment industrial giant, certainly does well in the premium computer notebook market as well. All of it’s new computers launches are stylish, futuristic and of course incorporated with the premium specs and premium prices. So it was just the right time for Sony to launch their new Santa Rosa line of notebooks.
This goes the same with the new AR and SZ series of Sony VAIOs, both premium models that features, Intel Core Duo Processor, SATA hard drive, XBRITE display Technology, NVIDIA GeForce graphic card, Wireless LAN, Built in camera, and Bluetooth. However, for the business traveler who is more concerned about the battery life and portability will probably go after the SZ series due to the smaller screen display at 13.3 inches compared with large 17” offered by the

HP Pavilion a6200n

The HP Pavilion a6200n doesn't really set itself apart in any particular area, but what it does is provide a complete overall package that is above average in just about every aspect. This makes the system a strong overall choice for those looking for a system that can do just about anything without breaking the bank.
Powering the Pavilion a6200n is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ dual core processor. This is probably one of the highest rated Athlon processors found in this price segment and gives it very strong overall performance. This is matched up with two full gigabytes of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory that provides it with a a very smooth experience even with the Vista operating system.
Storage is a bit above what most budget desktops offer. The 360GB hard drive is slightly larger than the average 320GB size, but its not really much of a difference. It still will provide plenty of hard drive space for applications and digital media files. The dual layer DVD burner handles all the playback and recording tasks of CDs and DVDs. One plus is that the drive also supports burning labels directly to LightScribe compatible media.
One thing that HP didn't skimp on with the Pavilion a6200n is the peripheral ports. Many companies are now not including FireWire ports with desktops. This is a shame because this is the easiest way to move video from a digital camcorder to the PC for editing. Thankfully, HP has included two such ports with the system.
There is a bit of a downside to the Pavilion a6200n though. HP has preinstalled a large amount of trailware onto the system. This causes the desktop to be a mess of icons and slows down the system from lots of unnecessary applications. Just be sure to delete those that you don't need to get a small performance boost.

Sony Vaio MX Computer

Sony home computers tend to be well-designed, stylish, and expensive, and the new Vaio MX is no exception. With this new Vaio, Sony manages to pack nearly every feature we could want into a small, stylish case. After using the new Vaio for several days, the term "feature-overload" sprang to mind. We started to wonder if anyone would ever use all of this computer's features. Sony style The Sony Vaio MX computer (model PCV-MXS10) features many impressive design touches and comes fully (and we mean fully) loaded with enough hardware to keep even the most hardcore (consumer) digital audio/video (AV) enthusiast busy for some time. The Vaio's case is standard Sony -- an attractive but smallish midtower design. A high-resolution, green-lit LCD display adorns the case's face and provides a nice place to put an animated Vaio logo. The display also shows drive activity, a feature usually seen as flashing LEDs on regular systems. Multimedia controls, including volume adjustment, are integrated on the front of the case with the LCD providing feedback. Sony's bundled media player applications also take advantage of the LCD to display additional track, title, and time-remaining information. A 40 watt (20 watt plus 20 watt) FM stereo receiver integrated into the Vaio MX powers two included speakers that stand nearly as tall as the PC case. Volume and sound quality are above average, as one would expect. Inputs, outputs, and ports galore The Vaio MX excels with its number of connection options. Opening a panel on the front of the computer reveals microphone and headphone jacks, a Type II PC Card (PCMCIA) slot, a Memory Stick slot, a four-pin IEEE 1394 (i.LINK/FireWire) connection, and a USB port. Turn the MX around and you'll find another USB port, a six-pin IEEE 1394 port, Ethernet, and a modem. The Vaio MX has some interesting audio options, including inputs and outputs for both analog (unamplified/RCA-style) and optical audio. This combination gives the MX great flexibility in terms of a home-theater setting or for audio capture. Hardware hits and misses Sony's Vaio MX sacrifices pure CPU performance in favor of a rich multimedia experience. Its midtower design packs a Pentium 4 running at 1.7 GHz and 512MB of SDRAM. The Pentium 4 is a data-starved processor, and pairing it with SDRAM instead of the faster RDRAM means the CPU has to wait a little longer. However, the large amount of RAM available helps make up for this design choice and only under memory-intensive situations would the average user notice the difference. Users who would like to increase the amount of memory in this system will be out of luck -- both memory slots (yes, only two) are already filled to their limit. The Vaio MX supports reading and writing CD or DVD media thanks to its Pioneer DVD-R/RW disc recorder. MiniDisc users will enjoy the integrated recorder featuring NetMD functionality and recording speeds up to 24X. The included keyboard has a nice feel and features quick-launch buttons for Internet and multimedia applications. A cleverly designed keyboard cover folds back to become a wrist rest. The included PS/2-style mouse is decent, but a $3,000 computer should include an optical mouse rather than the standard ball design. The MX's case is attractive and functional. All ports and drives on the front of the Vaio MX are easily accessed by the touch of a sculpted button. The integrated multimedia controls are also well made and match the system's overall design. The power button stands out with its bright blue LED backlight and unique shape. Touches like these add a sense of quality and make day-to-day use that much easier.

HP TouchSmart, a good pilothouse PC

The product image may be a little fruity—HP calls it the “perfect kitchen computer”—but I think this TouchSmart IQ770 might make one heck of a boat computer. That’s a 19” “BrightView” 1,440 x 900 pixel touchscreen display that responds to finger or stylus. I’ve tried navigating on tablet computers and think that while a stylus is fine for planning it’s not so great for underway work, especially if you get your hands on (sorry!) a navigation program truly designed for finger commands.
I understand that many tablets will soon get direct finger control—the possibility is built into Vista—but still with a tablet you need to come up with some solid mounting device for a pilothouse. This puppy is some 17 pounds with much of the weight in the base, so it shouldn’t be too hard to secure it somewhere in a pilot house. It also comes with wireless keyboard and mouse, a built-in web cam and surround sound, and an incredible amount of connectivity, including a HD TV tuner and FM radio. It’s also supposed to be quiet and power efficient, and a number of reviewers liked it. A week or so ago I e-mailed HP asking to test one myself , but, um, have not received a response. Amazon’s got it for about $1,550; who’s going to try it on their boat?
PS 9/11: I tried to make a better case for finger-touch screens in today’s entry. Also, I too appreciate how gorgeous iMacs are, but they don’t have any sort of touch interface (yet).

New Combo PC and TV from Sony

And continuing in the home media vein, here’s an interesting combination TV and PC device from Sony: the VA TV-PC series PCs combine a 20-inch LCD TV and a PC with a 3GHz Pentium 4 running Windows Media Center Edition. That’s speedy enough to do some serious video editing, and the 250GB hard drive and double layer rewritable DVD drive should give enough room to store lots of TV shows or home movies. Prices start at $1999.

HP TouchSmart

The first system in the series is the TouchSmart IQ770, featuring a fast, dual-core AMD Turion 64-X2 TL-52 CPU, 2GB of DDR RAM, a 320 GB hard drive and a SuperMulti DVD burner with LightScribe capability. The system comes with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Also included are a wireless keyboard and mouse, and built in WiFi and Bluetooth network interfaces.
The TouchSmart’s robust media capabilities include NTSC and ATSC tuners for both standard and high-definition (yay!) over-the-air television broadcasts. But the real unique feature of the show is the touch-sensitive 19-inch widescreen LCD screen (1440 x 900 resolution). This allows many of the features of the TouchSmart to be controlled without a mouse or keyboard. The system also integrates a 1.3 megapixel web cam, microphone, stereo speakers, and an 8-in-1 memory card reader.
The system’s dimensions - 18.88″ (l) x 21.77″ (w) x 11.37″ (h) are pretty comparable to those of the 20″ iMac, and unlike the iMac, the display can be adjusted in both angle and height. Apple still may win on styling and OS elegance, but in terms of on-board hardware, the TouchSmart might actually give the iMac a run for its money, with its powerful processing capabilities and more robust on-board media capabilities than the iMac currently offers.
The only real question is whether or not the TouchSmart will be priced competitively, since pricing has not yet been announced.

Sony Unleashes Most Powerful Vaio To Date

With the launch of the 'Vaio RM1N Ultimate HD Workstation' the company has produced its most powerful machine to date and, in a radical departure from the norms of desktop design, split it into two parts!
Flexibility is the reasoning behind the decision with the RM1N divided up into a primary chassis (complete with motherboard and major components) for storing out of the way while the secondary unit houses the optical drives and can be sat conveniently under a monitor or nearby. Clever stuff, but what about that horsepower?
To this end the RM1N will surprise too since it features a grease lightening Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 1TB (2 x 500GB 7,200rpm) SATA RAID 0 array storage, an nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS graphics card with 527MB of total available memory (256MB dedicated), a dual layer Blu-ray drive, DVD rewriter, 10/1000 Ethernet and last (and probably least) a copy of Windows Vista Business.
If (somehow) this spec isn't enough, the RM1N is also highly expandable with the system unit having room for four additional hard drives, three open PCI-e slots and it sports no less than 10 USB ports. The RM1N's RRP has been set at £2,500 (monitor not included) and it should touch down before the end of the month.

Apple iMacs up to 24 inches and 2.8 GHz

Super Drives, Mighty Mouse, Aluminum and Glass housing. All of this can only mean Apple Computers new iMac. Slimmer and more powerful than previous Macs, the new iMac comes as no surprise to anyone, but aims to blow poo-poohers out of their skin with a wide range of surprisingly affordable options. Starting at $1,199.00 a buyer can expect an advanced graphics card with 128 MB on board, 2.0 GHz performance, a 20-inch display, 250 Gigabytes of storage, the Super Drive and about a billion WOWS from friends and family.
For $2,299.00 a now poorer buyer can boast a better graphics card with 256 MB on board, 2.8 GHz performance, a 24-inch display (which is lucious enough on its own), twice the storage, the same Super Drive and the same billion WOWS from friends and family.
These machines include versions of iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, and GarageBand. i.e. you can create a photo book, make a movie, build a blog, compose a song, etc and say you did it on an iMac which instantly boosts the value of anything you do. We do this site and other on an HP Pavilion – see? No WOW from you…
Upgrades can take storage up to a phenominal one Terabyte, memory up to a smooth 4 Gigabytes and the operating system is OS X version 10.4 Tiger which recently rated friendlier than Vista and XP which cost more, require stronger computer guts and, in the case of Vista, take up five times MORE of your hard drive.

Dell Raises the Bar on Computer Recycling

Dell recently announced that it would offer free recycling of any of its machines, regardless of whether their owners were buying replacement systems from Dell. Previously, consumers needed to buy new Dell equipment to qualify for free recycling, a requirement that remains the practice for many other leading computer companies. "Dell's new program sets the bar high," said Kate Krebs, executive director of the National Recycling Coalition in Washington. With the new program, consumers will go to Dell's Web site (see this page) to print out a mailing label, then contact the company's recycling office to schedule a pickup by a local recycling contractor. Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer and other companies have introduced less ambitious programs to encourage the recycling of obsolete equipment.

Hewlett-Packard's program accepts computers made by any manufacturer, but consumers must pay for shipping, about $35 for a complete computer system. They then receive a coupon typically worth more than the shipping fee that they can use to buy Hewlett-Packard equipment or supplies like printer cartridges, said John Frey, manager of the corporate environmental strategies program.

Hewlett-Packard says it recycled 140 million pounds of hardware and printer cartridges last year, an increase of 17 percent from 2004.Apple announced in April that it would offer free recycling of old computers to customers who buy new ones, but consumers not buying a replacement must pay a $30 shipping fee. Apple offers free recycling of iPod music players to customers buying replacement iPods, and a 10 percent discount on the new device.

Discount Refurbished Computers From Dell

Remember one of my recent posts that discussed how companies like Dell and Gateway flooded the market with various computer models that were designed for the computer illiterate? Well, there is a website that specializes in selling discount refurbished computers and it is actually a branch of Dell Computers. The website, which is located at www.dfsdirectsales.com, has plenty of great machines available that are rather inexpensive. These computers may be outdated in terms of technology, but they are fully functional and will perform many of the necessary tasks that are associated with basic computing. If you are someone that only uses a computer for Internet browsing, then you can find plenty of machines at this website that are in the range of 200 to 500 dollars. This is a great option for someone that wants a cheap desktop computer with standard features, and I suggest that you visit the website for more information.
